I made this portrait in Darien, Connecticut a few years ago. The family commissioned a senior portrait of their daughter. We started with the color and digital format “casual” smiling images but I usually use that time to break the ice a little and develop a creative dialogue. This image captured that point of transition from childhood into young adulthood very well. She is serious but also has very kind, childlike eyes. I like how her hair and the wool wrap she chose blend. I’m happy with the result. The family (including the daughter) was very satisfied.
The technical details are as follows:
Deardorff 8×10 camera with a 300mm Heliar Lens. Shot on Ilford HP5 8×10 sheet film. Available light/open shade.
